Games Guide (GG) had the opportunity to ask some questions to Lyndsay Pearson (LP), a producer for The Sims 3: World Adventures. Currently, the first expansion for the best-seller The Sims 3 is being developed by the EA studio The Sims Studio from Redwood City, California.
GG: So, first off, thanks for answering some of our questions! First up, since World Adventures is the first expansion for The Sims 3, did you feel you needed to make it something extra special?
LP: For The Sims 3 World Adventures we really wanted to take what we did with The Sims 3 experience and make it bigger and different than anything players have seen from a Sims game before. We did feel like that meant we needed to try and expand the game in a totally new way.
GG: The expansion has some new, quite significant, gameplay changes. Because of this, do you feel the World Adventures expansion is different than most of the expansion for The Sims 2?
LP: The Sims 3 World Adventures offers an entirely new way to explore and discover for the Sims. This expansion pack introduces adventure gameplay for the first time in The Sims series. It's not just about visiting a location and meeting people, it's about taking chances and being caught off guard attempting to get to exciting new treasures or secret rooms. Your Sims are heading to real-world inspired locations to find hidden riches or recover artifacts lost to the ages. Travelling in The Sims 3 World Adventures is also a really different experience because of the open neighborhood. You can literally walk right up to a Great Pyramid and snap a picture then hike back to base camp all without loading screens.

GG: So, in World Adventures, you go out on adventure in different locations around the globe. Is it possible to explore the secrets of the pyramids with more than one Sim, or is it just a single Simdiana Jones?
LP: Adventuring with multiple Sims is definitely possible, and in some ways, easier. When there is a room with floor switches that can activate or deactivate secrets when someone stands on them, it's certainly an advantage to have more than one Sim. You'll just have to make sure your exploration party is prepared to adventure for a while, some of the tombs can be pretty complex.
GG: Do Sims need special items to get into tombs or pyramids? Like torches, crowbars and perhaps a rope?
LP: There are many items Sims can encounter that can help them get into these secret areas. Special keystones can be found, pickaxes to clear rubble out of the way, there's even a special item they can obtain that clear exceptionally large obstacles.
GG: Can children go on holiday and explore the pyramids on their own or must they stay behind (at home or the vacation villa) and wait until they grow up?
LP: Children are welcome to go on adventures with their families. There are many adventures in tombs that you'll encounter on your own, and there are additional activities in each exotic locale for them to participate in.
GG: Can Sims find valuable stuff in secret tombs and put it in their own homes on display? Will it be possible to donate stuff you find to the museum?
LP: Sims can find all kinds of valuables in secret tombs and hidden caves, ranging from rare relics to gems or even dried food. They'll also find some junk, but anything they find can be taken home and displayed. Sims can sell off their relics or discoveries or keep them at home to reminisce over.
GG: In The Sims 3, players could customize their homes with their own color schemes painted all over the couch, chairs, beds and whatnot. How will you make sure that people will be equally enthusiastic to create tombs and dark secret pyramids? It doesn't seem as cheery as the original The Sims 3.
LP: We expect that the enjoyment in building tombs will come from setting up interesting puzzles and experiences for your Sims. It's also important to note that a "tomb" can simply mean a secret area of a lot. Maybe that area is a fancy, hidden queen's chambers or a lost library. When you think about it that way, the creative possibilities are really wide open. You're not building dark tunnels, it could be anything. There are many adventures your Sims can have in France and in China. Photography is also very cool in the game. Your Sims can take pictures on their travels and display at home and you can share those on The Sims 3 Exchange as well.
GG: Will the locals Sims in France, Egypt, and China have different Simlish accents, or do they speak a different Simlish language altogether?
LP: All Sims in each location still speak Simlish, but you get hints of local flavor in music, appearances and some of your Sims' special socials.
GG: So, we've heard Sims can become mummies and play as them. Can you tell us a little more about what it actually means to be a mummy? For instance, can mummies stand the daylight and can they still go for a swim?
LP: Yes you can rumble with a mummy who's trying to place a curse on you or you could also become a mummy. Being a mummy has it's ups and downs, you live longer and get a break from certain motives but you move pretty slowly and are particularly flammable. Mummies can do pretty much anything regular Sims can do, if you want to go swimming and make a soggy mummy, go ahead!
GG: The Sims Store has become an important part of The Sims universe. Can we expect that new world locations will be downloadable in the future? Will the expansion also be available in The Sims Store? Will you support World Adventures via new downloadable items?
LP: We will be revealing online offerings for The Sims 3 World Adventures in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
GG: Can we expect some famous or local (i.e. French, Chinese or Egyptian) music bands singing some Simlish songs in World Adventures?
LP: You can certainly expect some great themed music that is unique to each location to give you the flavor of that country.
GG: Will there be a black market where you can find stuff for a much lower price?
LP: We didn't think of a creating a black market for our Sims! They're too honest. :-)
GG: Can Sims become permanent residents of France, China or Egypt?
LP: While Sims can purchase homes in these new locations, they cannot live there permanently. When a Sim has built up enough rapport with the locals to buy a location home, they can stay for about two weeks. Keep in mind that while your Sims are traveling, things aren't changing back at home so you wouldn't want them to be gone forever and neglect home!
GG: Last question. Can Sims make a road trip and take the car to their holiday destination? Do you actually see how Sims travel to their destinations? (like: seeing them go to an airport and take off with a jumbo jet?)
LP: When you start your game and decide to Travel your Sims can use a phone or computer to book their trip. They will be picked up by a taxi and drive off screen. After loading into your new destination, your Sims will appear at their new base camp, ready to adventure!
